UMZH Network

Zurich has a unique knowledge and healthcare cluster, which integrally combines bio-medical research, teaching and healthcare in a very confined spatial area. The vision of strengthening Zurich as a medical hub to meet the challenges of the future was launched by the Government Council of the Canton of Zurich in 2018 by establishing the Network University Medicine Zurich (UMZH) under the leadership of UZH.

The UMZH network consists of the six UMZH institutions: University of Zurich (UZH), ETH Zurich, University Hospital Zurich (USZ), University Hospital Balgrist, University Children's Hospital Zurich and University Hospital of Psychiatry Zurich (PUK).

The management of the UMZH network consists of a Coordination Committee and the Strategy Council. The Coordination Committee is supported by an office.

The Strategy Council is the highest body of the UMZH network. It is responsible for the development of the UMZH on a strategic level. The responsibilities and competences of the individual UMZH institutions remain untouched.

The Coordination Committee consists of eleven members from all UMZH institutions and is responsible for the operational management of the UMZH network. Chaired by the Vice President Medicine Zurich, Beatrice Beck Schimmer, it coordinates research and teaching, promotion of young talents and healthcare in Zurich. The Coordination Committee develops the basis for decisions regarding research, teaching, planning of professorships, finances, infrastructure and platforms for clinical research. Since 2021, precision medicine is a thematic-strategic focus that is intended to have an impact beyond Zurich.
An External Advisory Board of internationally recognised experts in the field of biomedical research provides advice to the Coordination Committee.
